The Mystery of God

16 Dec

The Mystery of God is centered around the nature of God – who God is, His character, personality, attributes – and His relationship with and towards His creation, and humankind in particular. To us humankind, it is the total consummation of God’s plan in bringing His kingdom in Christ to fulfillment on earth as it is in heaven. Knowing and understanding the Mystery of God on a personal basis is very vital in the walk of every believer in Christ Jesus.

This mystery is expressed in Ephesians 1:9-10;

“Making known to us the mystery of His will according to His good pleasure, which He purposed in Himself, unto the economy of the fullness of the times, to head up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens and the things on the earth, in Him.”

It is seen clearly here that the verse contains the phrase the mystery of His will; and expresses that the mystery of God’s will is according to His good pleasure, which He purposed in Himself.

Ephesians 3:9-11 says,

“And to enlighten all that they may see what the economy of the mystery is, which throughout the ages has been hidden in God, who created all things, in order that now to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenlies the multifarious wisdom of God might be made known through the church, according to the eternal purpose which He made in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

It is visible within these texts that lots of emphasis is being laid on three issues: Mystery of His Will, Economy of the mystery, and Eternal Purpose in Himself.

These relates to:

  1. What is the plan of God according to who God is – His nature and attributes – Mystery of His Will
  2. How such a plan operates, functions, is managed, and or being administered, on earth as it is in heaven – Economy of the Mystery
  3. Why God established such a plan for Himself that involves humans here on the earth realm – External Purpose in Himself

It is worth noting that there are some biblical texts that address aspects of these issues from different angles. Some from the external perspectives towards earth and man; while others from the earth realm and man towards the divine and the heavenly realm. For example, Romans begins or engages a sinful man on earth with a view towards man’s supposed heavenly nature in Christ; While Colossians and Ephesians begins with God, engaging the view point of the heavenly realm in relation to how the earth realm and man is to function.

As engaging with the Mystery of God is a life long journey, we at Candlelighters International, do encourage each member of our network to endeavour to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding within this context of this Mystery. We are of the understanding that the totality of the revelation that will emerge out of our individual engagements with such a mystery will jointly fortify us to light up our relationships with one another, as well as in radiating forth the glory of God on earth according to God’s eternal purpose.

For we understand that:

  1. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him (John 1:18)
  2. According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue (2Peter 1:3)
  3. … this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent (John 17:3)
  4. … we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory (1Corinthians 2:7)
  5. How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)…And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ (Ephesians 3:3-4, 9)
  6. … to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him (1Corinthians 8:6)

The materials and articles presented here will pay more attention to how useful the information could be to our practical daily living, and not just focusing on abstract concepts and ideas.
